Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench He didn't move,
just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he
didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if he was OK.
Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the
same time, I asked him if he was OK.

He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for
asking," he said in a clear strong voice.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at
your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I explained to him.
"Have you ever looked at your hands," he asked. "I mean really looked at your
hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms
up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as
I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this
story:
"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served
you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and
weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and
embrace life.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back.
As a child my Mother taught me to fold them in prayer.
They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots.
They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.
They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son.
Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married
and loved someone special.
They trembled and shook when I buried my Parents and Spouse and walked
my Daughter down the aisle.
They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the
rest of my body.
They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw.
And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these
hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life.
But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take
when he leads me home.

And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to
touch the face of Christ ."

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out
and took my Grandpa's hands and led him home.

When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been
stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the
face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to you and
watch God's answer to prayer work in your life. Let's continue praying for one
another .
Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.
Passing this on to one not considered a friend is something Christ would do.

George Carlin's Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when
we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that
you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a half.
You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next
number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna
be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the
words sound like a ceremony . . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like
bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're
Just a sour-dumpling.. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on
the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50

and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day
thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you
TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you
start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid
again. "I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever
let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more
than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how
it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a
new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast,
and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh
too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds
you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

This too shall pass Just Plain Quotes:

"Adversity has ever been considered the state in which a man most
easily becomes acquainted with himself." -Samuel Johnson

"It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves." -Sir Edmund Hillary

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." -Theodore
Roosevelt

My Take:

Sometimes things just sort of come up in your life to explain what's
going on or to put it all in perspective.  Without going into all the
details, the last month of my life has been one of the most difficult.
From my own health crisis, to the loss of a family member, to epic
tragedies of good friends to my brother's house burning down, it got to a
point where I was literally afraid to answer the phone, especially if it
rang after hours.

During this time span, amid the sadness and occasional hysteria, a
message seemed to be trying it's best to get through to me.  It was almost
like it sought me out.  Like big flashing lights were hanging above it
saying "think about this.. here's the comfort in all this madness
you're searching for."  I came across the first obvious hint of this concept
during something said in a documentary interview I was doing with Bob
Malone, a great LA based Singer Songwriter who had just performed a
house concert here at our home.  Next, I came across a story in a book
written by this guy who was reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica to
try and become the worlds smartest person.  And finally this morning I
came across the concept on line, in 2 different internet articles, one
based on a old Hebrew proverb and another on an internet blog discussing
internet viruses of all things.  So 4 completely different and
disconnected sources were all trying to get a message into my head which is
quite eye opening in it's simplicity.

This concept works very well to put things into perspective.  From the
very darkest moments of our lives to the very highest peaks of our own
hubris.  I did a little additional research on this concept and
immediately found references to it in Christian, Hebrew, Muslim, Buddhist and
a myriad of secular teachings.  Wow.  Something that pretty much all
cultures, religions and political viewpoints agree with, and though I had
heard it many times off and on in my life, I never really grasped the
depth of it's meaning.

"This too shall pass!"

Let it sink in a bit.  The amazing thing about this simple 4 word
statement is that it applies to any period in your life.  And if you
contemplate it's meaning, it can help you endure the bad times and it can help
you enjoy and get the most out of the good times while they last.  The
highest highs and the lowest lows are transient things.  How many of us
in our first adolescent school kid crushes thought we'd never get over
it and that our heart would never heal?  But it does.  How many people
scored a big victory one day, but found things had returned pretty much
to normal the next?  Isn't that always the way it works? Even though I
had heard that phrase countless times in my life, it was just this
morning that it's real meaning finally sunk in.  Sometimes the most
important lessons in life can't be taught to you, you simply have to learn
them from first hand experience.

There's further irony that while I am typing this, there's a press
conference going on for the 8 blue collar workers who won the largest
lottery jackpot ever.  Right now they are all enjoying the highest of highs.
But just as the turmoil in my own life will thankfully be temporary, so
will their triumph.  What seems more important is the totality of your
life rather than a single moment of accomplishment or tragedy.  Rather
than focus on the one bad thing, or let our egos get wrapped up in the
one great thing that happens, we should realize that the adventure of
our lives will have ups and downs and that the only sure thing is that
in both cases, they too will pass.  What's more important is who we are
and how we live before and after these blips on life's radar screen
come and go.  If we do it right, hopefully something positive and
meaningful will live on after our own times have passed.
